Meditation Basics

Meditation is one of the tools that has consistently saved me over the past few years.

Gaiam writes: Meditation is an approach to training the mind, similar to the way that fitness is an approach to training the body.

One thing that people always tell me is, “I have too many thoughts racing around in my mind. I can’t quiet my mind.”

And I tell them that the key to meditation is not to stop yourself from thinking but rather to become an observer of your thoughts. There are a few ways to meditate that you can find here but my favorite way to meditate is to choose a mantra. I state the mantra  (such as “I love myself”) over and over in my mind while trying to focus on my breath.

It is important to not beat yourself up if you find that your mind is wandering. Instead, gently redirect your focus and concentrate on your mantra and your breath.

The benefits of meditation are endless. They include decreased stress levels, decreased anxiety, and better control of thoughts and emotions.

There are many tools available to help you including videos on YouTube and meditation apps. Start by meditating for five minutes a day and increase the amount of time as you see fit. Don’t be afraid to experiment and find the best method for you.
